One of my favorite NaNo terms is “pantser”—as in writing by the seat of your pants, without an outline.

The term brings up the age-old debate about how to best go about writing a novel: pantser vs. planner. I’m intrigued by people’s approaches to writing a novel because writers’ processes can seem as indelibly etched in their psyches as their genetic makeups. Some of us like clutter. Some of us need clean, organized spaces. Some of us live somewhere in between.

Me: “I’ve been and still pretty much am, a ‘Pantser’. It’s too chaotic for my liking. 'Principled Technique’ is more than called for, for a few reasons I can mention.

1) Procrastination - there’s a post due up yesterday, still not finished.

2) Self-confidence - not the kind of confidence that comes from feeling 'on form’ alone.

3) The ? that I didn’t even have more than one reason in my honest wee head before starting this list…

…and that’s one technique I’m adopting before writing up an unfinished piece - listing.

I put together a list before, on this blague, on the fly with only a few ideas buzzing around my dimly lit brain. The result however wasn’t dim…

…so why leave such power up to chance?

It’s still art, just with rehearsals before a staged performance - and no two performances are alike, akin maybe, but the path is always a boldly plodded - not planned - performance.”
